Description

The purpose of this class within the organization is to operate, repair and maintain heavy equipment. This class works under general supervision, independently developing work methods and sequences.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Safely operates a motorized sweeper and other motorized maintenance/construction equipment on an assigned route.

  • Clean streets, gutters, and report large debris on streets and right of way; respond to traffic accidents; clean debris and hazardous material spills.

  • Responsible for operating and hauling equipment which may include, pick-up trucks with trailers, zero-turn mowers with multiple attachments, and other related equipment in the Department of Transportation Operations Division.

  • Maintain sidewalks and bike paths within the County ROW. Report any deficiencies in the pavement.

  • Clear obstructions including minor vegetation encroachment, trash pick up, or dirt/debris.

  • Operates hand and power tools, performs routine maintenance and inspections of related equipment, and maintains road right of way.

  • May work with a crew or independently.

  • Occasionally assists other crews and departments.

  • Knowledge of traffic regulations and the skill to set up a safe work zone.

  • Be able to fill in for the absence of the Lead Operator in documenting daily activities, directing crews, and reporting to the Project Manager.

Education, Experience, Licensing

  • Requires any combination of education and experience equivalent to High School graduation or GED equivalent and three years heavy equipment operation or closely related experience.

  • Possession of a valid Class B CDL with airbrake endorsement and an acceptable driving record is required.

  • This is a safety-sensitive position, which is subject to Drug & Alcohol Workplace testing as provided in DOT regulation 49CFR-parts 40 and /or 382.

Supplemental Information

  • The work days and hours are Tuesday - Friday 7:00 AM - 5:30 PM. Some night shifts, no set hours.
