Job Description

The opportunity

This position is accountable for developing and managing process efficiencies across underwriting transactions. Also, provides accurate and immediate evaluation of applications for insurance within the Turn- around- time (TAT) and giving equitable and sound underwriting decision to protect the company against uninsurable risk. This helps the company in meeting its territory’s overall underwriting performance and company’s overall growth and financial goal.

Responsibilities

UNDERWRITING

  • Screen completeness and accuracy of submitted documents as well as consistency of signature in all the forms

  • Ensure cases are paid with sufficient premium and all documents are properly documented

  • Underwrites cases within approval authority and beyond approval authority but give recommendations and seek approval of Chief Underwriter

  • Responsible for the integrity of the underwriting approval of all applications within underwriting authority limits.

  • Ensures that all applications for the production month must be completed and issued by the month end

  • To handle referral and discussion of complex and High Net Worth cases with medical consultant, Regional Risk Head and Compliance Team.

  • Make basic analysis of financial evidence such as tax returns, company accounts, financial statement and arrive at a decision

  • Performs a variety of routine and complex administrative areas related to Underwriting

HANDLES INQUIRIES FROM AGENTS AND CUSTOMERS

  • Communicates with distributors to help understand underwriting practices and decisions which help build solid beneficial relationships.

  • Prepares communications to clients regarding requirements

  • Attends to follow ups and inquiries from agents and their secretaries and initiates proper action

  • Observes the service standards committed by the department in handling related tasks

SUPERVISION AND LEADERSHIP

  • Responsible for the supervision of the team on daily activities as to application processing, productivity and timely issuance of applications

  • Ensures that procedures are adhered to and underwriting/other matters are within expected service standards.

  • Ensures that the team undertakes prompt and accurate underwriting functions.

  • Implement and ensure strict compliance with all underwriting policies, rules and regulations.

  • Identify potential areas for changes and makes the necessary recommendations

  • Ensures to maintain staff engagement to a high level.

  • Develop a high performing Team.

  • The incumbent is required to contribute to effective leadership by demonstrating a high level of personal integrity, cooperation and positive enthusiasm

  • The incumbent must ensure the effective operation of the Company’s legal function, including compliance with the PLIA regulation, insurance law and general business law

REPORT PREPARATION & STATISTICS

  • Responsible for the timely and accurate review of AUW result, Team Productivity and Turn around time on a monthly basis. Analyze experience, data and trends and provides observations and recommended possible areas for improvement or change

RELATIONSHIP SUPERVISION/MARKET RESEARCH

  • Responsible for several agents and is the secondary point of contact for Sales personnel.

  • Gathers/conducts industry surveys for underwriting updates.

DOCUMENTATION/SELF AUDIT

  • Meets all file documentation standards, complies with underwriting and authority level standards.

  • Conducts periodic underwriting audit for every underwriter.

  • Conducts review of cases with each underwriter upon completion of each audit session.

COMPANY REPRESENTATION

  • Actively participate in seminars and other activities in behalf of the company in various associations (PLIA, MIB, HOLUAP)

  • Ability to render service efficiently and in friendly, complete, timely and accurate manner

  • Demonstrate working knowledge of business practices in relation to existing regulatory requirements

  • Show care and concern and to acknowledge the complaint promptly from customers

  • Possess basic knowledge of all insurance plans, riders, policy provisions and company policies

What we are looking for

  • Graduate of Bachelor's Degree in either Social Science/Sociology, Medical Science, Nursing or its equivalent

  • 5 - 10 years underwriting experience

  • Achieving at least 90% agreement rating from a self-audit case review at the end of that period

  • Strong Leadership Skills with experience in supervising a team

  • Strength of character to provide recommendations or communicate issues and has good decision-making skills

  • Ability to effectively collaborate with the team and other departments

  • Maintain efficiency, reduce errors or reworks, observe confidentiality of information

  • Work with team to achieve corporate goals and objectives

  • LOMA, AALU, FALU certification/exam is an advantage

  • Proficient in using MS Office: Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel & Powerpoint
